Everton to be on red alert after ‘impossible’ Kalvin Phillips transfer update at Manchester City

Everton have already been a lot more active in the early stages of the summer transfer window than most supporters would have expected.

Sean Dyche has added to his side with the signings of Tim Iroegbunam and Iliman Ndiaye while Dele Alli could be set to extend his stay at Goodison Park after the Toffees reached an agreement with Tottenham.

The Blues boss will still be keen for a few more additions this summer and one player who has regularly been linked with making the move to Merseyside over the last few months is Kalvin Phillips.

Reports have suggested that the Toffees have already made an approach to Manchester City to sign the England international following his poor loan spell with West Ham United last term [Daily Mail, 20 June].

However, Everton and Dyche will have been on red alert after a new update surrounding the midfielder emerged from BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone.

Writing on the BBC Sport website on Monday (15 July) he said: “It seems impossible the 28-year-old will remain at City for the coming campaign but for now, he will train with Guardiola and his players, with the likelihood that he will go to the USA for their four-match tour later this month. “

Will Kalvin Phillips exit Manchester City amid Everton transfer speculation?

It has been clear for some time now that Phillips’ future was going to lie away from the Etihad, but Stone’s assessment that it will be “impossible” for him to remain with the Blues’ Premier League rivals will be good news for the Toffees.

This update all but gives them the greenlight to swoop in and secure the former Leeds United star’s signature, if they do remain interested in his services at this stage of the summer.

With Amadou Onana edging closer to a move to Aston Villa and the likes of Idrissa Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucoure not getting any younger, additional midfield reinforcements could be required.

If the right deal can be struck with the Premier League champions, this feels like a move that would suit all parties as Dyche has specialised in helping players get back to their best in recent years.

It may not be completed soon if Phillips does travel to the US for City’s pre-season tour, but a move to Goodison may still be on the cards.
