Sean Dyche sees another Everton midfielder leave as ace confirms exit amid Amadou Onana talks
Lewis Warrington has confirmed he is leaving Everton this summer after 15 years at the club.
The Toffees midfielder posted a message to X on 15 July thanking the staff who had supported him through his 15-year career on Merseyside after coming through the youth ranks.
Warrington, 21, moved to Plymouth Argyle on loan last season but injury saw the move cancelled early during January and his contract at Goodison Park was allowed to expire this summer.
He departs along with Andre Gomes on free transfers while another midfielder in Amadou Onana is now on the brink of a big-money exit to Aston Villa.
In the post on his personal social media account, Warrington ended by saying: “Even though I am moving on, this club will remain a massive part in mine and my families lives. See you all in the stands.”
Lewis Warrington thanks Everton staff after Goodison exit
Warrington’s time at his boyhood club has fizzled out disappointingly over the past two years after he appeared set for a first-team breakthrough under Frank Lampard.
The then-teenager had impressed the former manager during the 2022 preseason and a new Everton contract was signed at a time when there was interest from other clubs.
But he instead left for a season on loan at League One Fleetwood Town and although he was a regular there he returned after Lampard had been sacked and replaced by Sean Dyche.
The step up to Championship level at Plymouth Argyle was unsuccessful as his injury helped restrict him to just four appearances in all competitions.
Dyche did give him just his second first-team appearance for the club with a late introduction off the bench against Sheffield United on 11 May but clearly didn’t have long-term plans for him.
Tim Iroegbunam, also 21, has been signed permanently from Aston Villa to help restock the midfield after exits and Chelsea’s Lesley Ugochukwu is a loan target to fill Onana’s space [Foot Mercato, 13 July] so Warrington will hope to get a new start elsewhere.
In other Everton news, David Ornstein has shared a “hugely substantial” transfer update as another Toffees ace wanted.
