Joe Thomas shares what Seamus Coleman did after Everton friendly v Sligo Rovers

Everton defender Seamus Coleman paid tribute to his former club Sligo Rovers in an incredible way during their friendly on Friday (19 July), according to Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas.

The Toffees played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Sligo Rovers – the club where Coleman started his career. As part of the celebrations, the Irishman spent over an hour taking pictures and giving out autographs to fans of both sides as the 35-year-old soaked in his big moment (19 July).

It comes just a month after the Toffees veteran put pen to paper on a new one-year deal that takes him through to June 2025.

Seamus Coleman is Everton’s finest

While it may not have been the result that Everton fans desired, an exhilarating six-goal draw with Coleman’s first professional club feels appropriate. Over the course of the last 15 years, he has served as a consistent force at the back for the blue half of Merseyside, making over 350 appearances in that time.

Alas, at this point in his career, questions will be asked about what kind of first-team opportunities he’s going to get in the 2024/25 campaign. He made just seven starts in the Premier League last season (FBref) due to a serious injury sustained during a clash with Boubakary Soumare, but he did still feature heavily in the relegation run-in.

He’s made it crystal clear that he still believes he has a significant role to play at the club before hanging up his boots. Plus, with all of the uncertainty going on off the pitch, having a club legend around to lift the team every week is worth the deal alone.

In other Everton news, Manchester United have submitted a bid to hijack a deal for Amadou Onana.
