Everton to prepare Jake O’Brien documents, medical may be moved to Monday – Fabrizio Romano

Everton are set to prepare documents for Lyon’s Jake O’Brien ahead of a medical at Goodison Park, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian transfer specialist reported via his personal X account [27 July] that the Toffees could move the player’s medical to Monday 29 July in order to prepare the documents on Sunday 28 July.

Sean Dyche’s side have agreed a deal in principle to bring the 23-year-old centre-back to Goodison Park on a five-year deal, using the famous “here we go” phrase in the post.

The former Crystal Palace centre-back has impressed in Ligue 1 since flying the Selhurst Park nest last summer, making 27 league starts for Lyon after being unable to make a senior appearance for the Eagles.

The Toffees have reportedly been long-time admirers of the defender, having targeted him since the summer transfer window opened, and they were not the only club interested.

Kevin Thelwell and the club have had to act quickly to potentially acquire his signature this summer, which looks to be an even more important move following the news around Jarrad Branthwaite.

The 22-year-old looks unlikely to sign a new contract at Goodison Park, unless the Toffees can offer him £160,000-a-week, amid links to Manchester United [Daily Mail].

Dyche’s defence was one of the main positives on Merseyside last term, with only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool conceding fewer Premier League goals.

The defensive trio of Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford was not one to be messed with, but with the former potentially seeking a move away, O’Brien looks to be a suitable replacement.

The centre-back already has two international caps for the Republic of Ireland, being called up to the squad for the first time in March 2024 due to his performances in the French league.
