Kevin Thelwell can stage late hijack for striker as Tammy Abraham makes Everton transfer call
Everton have already been busy in the transfer market this summer and now the Toffees’ attention has appeared to turn to a new striker.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s future remains unclear at Goodison Park as the centre-forward enters the final year of his contract and there remains a chance he could depart before the window slams shut.
Several names have been linked with a move to Merseyside already, the latest of which has been Roma forward Tammy Abraham who is thought to be on the Blues’ radar.
However, reports from Italy have suggested the England international isn’t interested in joining Sean Dyche’s side, with his focus being entirely on a potential move to European giants AC Milan [Corriere Della Sera, 1 August, page 9].
Are Everton close to any new signings in the summer transfer window?
Should that be the case, the Toffees will have to turn their attention to an alternative target and that could perhaps see Eddie Nketiah’s name return to the fold in the final weeks of the transfer window.
Everton are understood to be one of several Premier League and European clubs interested in securing the Arsenal striker’s signature, with reports suggesting he is available for the right price [Caught Offside, 11 July].
However, Fabrizio Romano (1 August) has revealed the Gunners ace has reached an agreement over personal terms with Ligue 1 club Olympique Marseille ahead of a summer move.
But the two clubs are yet to agree on the terms of the transfer with a deal still not yet close as talks continue between all parties involved.
With a move for Abraham now off of the cards, Everton and Kevin Thelwell may now have the chance to stage a late hijack on Marseille’s move for Nketiah to bolster their attacking ranks ahead of the Premier League season.
If they were able to agree on a deal with the Gunners, they should have the financial muscle to match the Ligue 1 club’s wage offer as well as allowing the England international to stay in the Premier League.
It will be interesting to see whether or not the Toffees reignite their interest in the forward in the coming days. They’ll have to make a decision sooner rather than later or it could well be too late.
