Everton on red alert as Eddie Howe makes Kieran Trippier admission after Newcastle exit update

Everton may have been busier than expected so far in the summer transfer window, but the Toffees may still complete more business ahead of the 30 August deadline.

Reports suggest the Blues could still make two more signings before the transfer window slams shut as Sean Dyche looks to add to his squad after a miserable start to the Premier League season [Give Me Sport, 24 August].

While it isn’t clear where Dyche will look to bolster his options, Kieran Trippier has repeatedly been linked with a move to Goodison Park with his future at Newcastle United unclear at this stage.

Reports suggest that the Toffees are in the hunt to sign the versatile England international, with the 33-year-old ready to leave St James’ Park before the transfer window slams shut [David Ornstein, 22 August].

While Dyche himself has played down such speculation, the Blues will have been on red alert as Magpies boss Eddie Howe dropped a new update on the defender before Newcastle’s clash with Bournemouth.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday (25 August) Howe said: “No not at all. Kieran is just back from the Euros, Timo [Livramento] started last week and the team did well defensively.

“As I said in my press conference in the build-up to the game, Kieran is a massive part of our future.”

Will Kieran Trippier exit Newcastle United amid Everton transfer rumours?

Howe seems insistent that Trippier has a major role to play at Newcastle beyond the end of the transfer window, but it isn’t clear whether or not the defender himself is as eager to remain at St James’ Park.

The 33-year-old wants to be playing regular first-team football and so far, he is yet to be included in the Newcastle starting XI for either of their first two matches this season.

His inclusion on the substitutes bench suggests that no move to Merseyside is exactly imminent at this stage of the window, but that doesn’t mean that a deal cannot be agreed before the end of August.

Saturday’s (24 August) defeat to Tottenham has only increased the need for new signings at Goodison so this could be one to watch in the coming days.
