Alan Shearer shares ‘rotten’ Everton relegation verdict in new takeover admission

Alan Shearer admits that he fears Everton could be relegated this season after the Toffees’ “rotten” defeat to Tottenham.

Sean Dyche’s side were pulled apart by Spurs on Saturday (24 August) as Ange Postecoglou’s side ran out 4-0 winners in North London to leave the Blues rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

Although Shearer believes it will take all of Dyche’s experience to pull the Toffees away from the dropzone, he thinks it will boost Everton’s hopes of survival if a takeover is completed sooner rather than later.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football (26 August, 49:10) he said: “Everton were rotten, I thought they were awful.

“Three goals at home last week, four goals at the weekend and already the manager is saying we’ve got a small squad to choose from. I know they’ve got one or two injuries but he’s going to have to use all of his experience wisely this season if he is going to keep Everton in the Premier League.

“The sooner that they get taken over in terms of being bought by someone who is invested, who wants to be their long-term and interested, then the better it will be for them.

“The longer that it goes on, the more I feel for them.”

Will Everton be relegated amid takeover uncertainty at Goodison Park?

Even the most positive Everton supporters would agree that the Toffees were rotten against Spurs at the weekend and there is a general feeling of frustration around the Blues fanbase at this moment in time.

While a lot of that has been directed and Dyche and the players, most of the anger among fans stems from issues higher up at Goodison Park that have filtered down the club and are now impacting matters on the pitch.

Dyche does have a small squad to pick from and a lack of money available to him in the transfer window, but that is a result of the decisions of Farhad Moshiri over the last couple of seasons which have now come back to bite the Toffees.

The Blues owner has had ample time to find a fit and proper owner who could help steer the club in a more positive direction. Instead, he has negotiated with parties who can’t afford the club and racked up the club’s debt whilst doing so.

As Shearer suggests, the entire feeling around the blue half of Merseyside would be so much more positive if a takeover was finally completed and there was a new owner at the top of the club.
