Chris Sutton bemused by ‘nightmare’ Calvert-Lewin news at Everton

Chris Sutton cannot believe the “nightmare” situation that Everton find themselves in regarding Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 27-year-old remains poised for an exit from Goodison Park with Sean Dyche admitting a sale could be sanctioned before the 30 August deadline [Daily Mail].

Sutton discussed the future of Calvert-Lewin on The Monday Night Club for BBC Sport [26 August] and was bemused that the Blues would consider selling their star striker with only a few days remaining in the summer transfer window.

He said: “They have talented players and have kept hold of [Jarrad] Branthwaite, which is a pretty big deal.

“There’s talk of Calvert-Lewin being sold, which I find a little bit strange even if they have signed [Iliman] Ndiaye and have Beto.”

Told that Calvert-Lewin is out of contract next summer, Sutton responded: “It’s a nightmare situation for Sean Dyche and it does feel like Everton and Calvert-Lewin has run its course.

“But I wouldn’t be in a hurry to get him out of the door because we know he’s an extremely capable player.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin could leave Everton this summer

There is no love lost for Everton supporters with Calvert-Lewin, whose future is as uncertain as ever ahead of the 30 August deadline.

The Blues forward has been the subject of speculation all summer [talkSPORT], since a proposed move to Newcastle United collapsed in June, with both sides desperate to raise funds before the 30 June Profit and Sustainability Rules deadline.

Everton have conducted a public pursuit for his replacement. Barcelona striker Vitor Roque was on the shortlist before his move to Real Betis, and as the available options begin to dwindle, Dyche is forced to get creative in his approach.

Newcastle’s reported revived interest in Calvert-Lewin could see him used as a bargaining chip in a deal that would see Kieran Trippier move the other way [TBR Football] but, of course, the finances would play a crucial role in brokering a deal.

Chelsea have also registered their interest in the 27-year-old, and a deal to see Armando Broja arrive at Goodison Park this summer would be a more suitable outcome for the Blues [The Athletic].

It is becoming more apparent by the day that Calvert-Lewin’s days at Everton will end. He has been a fantastic servant for the club but with a return of only seven Premier League goals last term, perhaps this is the right opportunity for both parties to part ways.
