Neal Maupay breaks social media silence as Everton exit finalised

Neal Maupay has taken to social media after his exit from Everton was confirmed on Friday (30 August).

The Toffees confirmed that the French striker, who managed just one goal in 32 appearances, has joined Marseille on a loan deal with an obligation to buy.

The Liverpool Echo (30 August) reported that Everton are due to receive an initial £6million for the 28-year-old and could end up earning as much as £10m depending on certain conditions.

Writing on Instagram following his move, Maupay wrote: “Hello Marseille. It is a great pride for me to play for Olympique de Marseille and to have the honor of wearing this very special jersey.

“Thank you all for your welcome and your messages. See you very soon on the pitch, I will do everything to make you proud.”

Everton fans shed no tears as Neal Maupay seals Marseille move

Everton paid a reported £15m to sign Maupay from Brentford only two years ago (BBC Sport) and, to be frank, the move has been an unmitigated disaster.

So much so that he was shipped on loan back to the Bees last season, although they opted not to take up a purchase option on him.

Thankfully, Everton have managed to find another suitor for a striker whose lively presence on social media was never replicated on the pitch in an Everton shirt.

Everton supporters will be crying no tears at seeing Maupay depart and the fact they are getting a healthy-ish fee for someone who has been a colossal disappointment is even better news.

Now, of course, the club need to try and focus on getting a couple of extra bodies in the door and that should happen in the form of Orel Mangala and Ernest Nuamah, both due to arrive on loan from John Textor-owned Lyon.
