Jeff Stelling makes ‘nonsense’ Sean Dyche sack claim at Everton

Jeff Stelling believes the noise being made around the potential sacking of Sean Dyche from Everton is “nonsense”.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (3 September), Stelling and Ally McCoist were talking about where the Toffees go after their disappointing collapse against Bournemouth on 31 August.

The Toffees managed to somehow throw away a two-goal lead despite being ahead in the 87th minute and missed out on gaining their first Premier League points of the season.

Stelling said that he’d “reserve judgement” on whether they’d retain their Premier League status this season but did share his verdict on the future of Dyche.

“I’ll reserve judgement on whether they’ll be okay but one thing I won’t reserve judgment about is that it’s nonsense to be talking about getting rid of Sean Dyche at this stage,” he said.

“For most of that game against Bournemouth, they were by far the better side.”

What comes next for Sean Dyche and Everton

Despite Everton having an incredibly poor start to their Premier League season, throughout the first 80 minutes of their clash against the Cherries, the Toffees dominated.

Tim Iroegbunam and Iliman Ndiaye were no doubt the stars of the show [Connor O’Neill, 2 September, 33:53] but towards the end of the game, they, alongside their teammates, seemed to tire.

Not only does this show that the recruitment that the Toffees made over the summer was beneficial to the squad but it also shows that things could now start to turn around.

Dyche did an excellent job in tough circumstances last season and, while he cannot be absolved of blame for the Bournemouth debacle, he surely still has enough credit in the bank for now.

McCoist also touched on the potential return of David Moyes [talkSPORT, 3 September] but in truth that is a situation that is better left untouched, consigned to history.

If the poor run continues there will no doubt be many more rumours circling around Dyche’s future, but, for now at least, it feels as if the Toffees would be better off sticking with the 53-year-old.
