Everton takeover: ‘Absolutely critical’ John Textor verdict shared by expert

John Textor needs “deep pockets” to successfully takeover Everton from Farhad Moshiri, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

The American billionaire has reportedly entered a period of exclusivity with the current Blues owner [David Ornstein, 15 August] but must first sell his 45 per cent stake in Crystal Palace.

TalkSPORT host Jim White has suggested that Textor possesses a net worth of £3.77billion [talkSPORT, 16 August) and while finance expert Plumley insists that’s a positive, he insists a deal may still hinge on Moshiri’s valuation.

“What is good wealth anymore to own a football club?” Plumley exclusively told Goodison News.

“We know that you’ve got to have deep pockets, that’s absolutely critical and again if you look at some of the takeovers at the top of the league, the benchmark is in and around £4billion to £5billion to buy one of those big six football clubs.

“But you’ve got to have a considerable amount of wealth beyond that because you can’t just pile all of your wealth into the takeover.

“I’ve said before, I know Moshiri has been after a £500million valuation but everything I’ve been involved in terms of valuation metrics would suggest that is a little bit high.

“You’re probably placing Everton in the £250million to £300million ballpark and it’s within that context you’ve got to look at the overall wealth of whatever owner and work out whether or not that is good, bad or indifferent.

“It will of course depend on how much of that capital and worth throughout the course of whatever tenure that person is willing to put at risk.

“But listen, if you’re owning a Premier League football club nowadays, you’ve got to be a billionaire rather than a multi-millionaire and that’s the reality of it.

“The net worth is good, but let’s caveat that with what are the operational challenges of running that club and what valuation is it?

“Also how much of that net worth are you willing to spend and given the regulatory framework can you put into the club in years to come?”

Will John Textor takeover Everton from Farhad Moshiri at Goodison Park?

While the news about Textor’s net worth will have certainly excited Everton fans, there is still a lot of work to be done and hoops to be jumped through before any takeover is completed.

Hopefully, a final decision will be made by both Textor and Moshiri sooner rather than later so that this deal can either advance or be put to bed.

The Toffees simply cannot afford to have yet another saga drag on with no obvious conclusion.
