Everton ‘biggest problem’ shared at Goodison as January transfer plans mooted

Everton and Sean Dyche are not going to “sign loads of players” in the January transfer window, according to Tim Spiers.

The Toffees have had a terrible start to the Premier League season and currently sit bottom of the table without a win after their disappointing last-minute defeat to Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

Although some pundits and supporters have called for Dyche to be sacked, Athletic journalist Spiers admits the Toffees’ biggest problem is the fact that there is very little they can change at this time.

Speaking on The Athletic YouTube channel (7 September) he said: “I think the biggest problem for Everton is if things aren’t working what do they change?

“They had 14 players last week I think, it’s not like they’ve got depth in the squad, they’re not going to go out and sign loads of players in January and if you’re in a relegation scrap you probably want Sean Dyche as manager.

“If this is it for the rest of the season then you’d be worried because statistically that is one of the worst Premier League defeats of all time.”

Will Everton sack Sean Dyche at Goodison Park?

It does feel as though Everton have been stuck in this loop over the last couple of years. The Toffees feel as though they are almost doing the bare minimum to survive in the Premier League year after year both in a footballing sense and financially.

As Spiers suggests, they won’t have the funds to make several additions to the squad in January, they have absolutely no depth in their ranks and they arguably already have the right manager for a relegation scrap.

Those three factors make it incredibly difficult for the Blues to make any meaningful changes that could impact their fight for survival this term which is why supporters and pundits alike are so worried about what could happen.

Hopefully, Dyche and those above him on the blue half of Merseyside will once again find a way to pull a rabbit out of the hat and turn things around.

It won’t be easy, but there is still plenty of time and lots of football to be played for the Toffees to get their season up and running.
