Dominic Calvert-Lewin confuses with his latest Everton comments amid contract dilemma
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s recent comments on Everton have had a confusing impact on supporters on Merseyside, due to his ongoing contract issue.
A snippet from the England striker’s club interview, said to be available in the matchday programme for the fixture with Fulham on 26 October, has been quoted on the Toffees’ X page [23 October].
Calvert-Lewin’s current deal expires in the summer, with a departure to Newcastle United falling through before the start of the season and a failure to so far agree fresh terms.
Talks remain ongoing, but clubs are on red alert including Italian giants Juventus [Corriere dello Sport, 17 October].
The forward said: “I think if you’d have said to me when I joined the club that in eight years’ time, this is the position I’d be in, I think I’d be pretty happy with that.”
Does Dominic Calvert-Lewin leave Everton in 2025?
Everton fans can be forgiven for thinking Calvert-Lewin has contradicted himself here – if he was so overjoyed to be the Toffees’ number nine, one would be inclined to think he would have extended his deal by now.
The forward has a future to look after and at 27, as the cliche goes, his next contract is massive and potentially career-defining.
Although it is not too commonplace for a player of his age these days to be in his ninth season at the same club – demonstrating a clarity that he does love and respect the Toffees – it is still a strangely committed-sounding comment to make with eight months left on his deal.
Calvert-Lewin is in fact only a matter of weeks away from being eligible to agree a pre-contract agreement for July 2025 with a foreign club, perking the ears of the likes of Juventus, an appealing destination for any player.
Everton will, however, hope they can agree terms with their frontman before the turn of the year to avoid losing him for nothing.
