Sean Dyche names what Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still ‘getting to grips’ with at Everton
Sean Dyche has admitted Everton ace Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still “getting to grips” with the defensive side of being a striker.
Everton have found some form in recent weeks and are now 15th in the Premier League and currently find themselves on a five-game unbeaten streak.
In quotes reported by Liverpool World (27 October), Dyche shared that putting in defensive work is now “forever important” as a modern-day centre-forward which is something Calvert-Lewin still needs to work on.
“We’ve spoken to him [Beto] a lot about the defensive side, he’s still getting to grips with that as is Dom,” he said.
“Working from the front, defending from the front is forever important for the modern centre-forward. It’s not just stand up there and score, centre-forwards have to defend cutely, not tackles but getting in passing lanes to cut off the pass usually to a deep-lying midfield player.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs to improve his form for Everton
The form of Calvert-Lewin and Beto in the final third over the last couple of seasons has been the thorn in Everton’s side for some time now.
While the starting XI certainly looks worse without the Englishman within the set-up, it still feels like the striker could do more for the team.
Beto did manage to salvage a point for Everton from their Premier League game against Fulham on 26 October after he bagged a 94th-minute equaliser for the Merseyside outfit, helping keep their unbeaten run intact.
However, that goal is the striker’s only one in the top flight this season which, for someone who’s supposed to be the focal point of an attack, is far from ideal.

The Toffees have found themselves in a decent run of form lately and have worked their way up the table but it still feels like their potential isn’t being fulfilled.
Dwight McNeil’s performances have helped carry them through this recent period but he can’t be solely relied upon each week which means players such as Calvert-Lewin will have to step up and be the difference-makers otherwise things could quickly turn sour at the club.
