Dominic Calvert-Lewin singled out as ‘big problem’ at Everton is shared

Mike Hughes has singled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin after his recent performances in the final third for Everton but has admitted he looks like he’s doing his best with the “limited” service he gets from his teammates.

Everton are 16th in the Premier League table and are only three points away from the drop zone after an indifferent campaign.

Writing for the BBC Sport website (13 November), BBC journalist Hughes shared what he believes the “big problem” at Goodison Park is at the moment.

“The big problem is a lack of creativity in the final third with the Blues not fashioning enough takeable chances,” he wrote.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s recent lack of goals is highlighted – with some justification – but as a centre-forward, he is often trying to thrive on a very limited service.

“Both full-backs have done a decent job lately and though Ashley Young has weighed in with valuable assists this season, neither he or Vitaliy Mykolenko can be expected to deliver a supply of quality crosses for Calvert-Lewin to benefit from”.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs to refind his goalscoring form for Everton

One of the main debates that have emerged from the Toffees’ camp this term is whether they should extend Calvert-Lewin’s contract at the end of the season.

The Englishman has led Everton’s attacking line for as long as many can remember with the former Sheffield United man now basically synonymous with the club.

At the moment, Sean Dyche doesn’t have many options to fill the number nine role but with the impending returns of Youssef Chermiti and Armando Broja, competition to lead Dyche’s attacking line will surely be heating up soon.

While the injured duo aren’t yet ready to return to action, there hasn’t really been a better time for Calvert-Lewin to show that he’s still got what it takes to be the focal point of a Premier League team.

Clubs such as Juventus have shown an interest in him recently but unless he can prove that there’s still a clinical finisher within him, it’s hard to see how any team could justify paying him the wages he desires.

Hence why, the Englishman needs to turn things around as soon as possible.
