Everton forced to play waiting game over outstanding PSR issue

Everton are yet to be given any clarity on an outstanding financial fair play dispute concerning stadium interest, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Echo reported on 20 November that the Toffees face an “anxious wait” to determine whether a new hearing will be held over the club’s capitalisation of stadium interest, an issue first raised back in April.

Initially ruled to be “too complex” to be heard at the time, the matter remains unresolved, despite legal experts stating that all parties involved in the case should aim to do so with “speedy determination”.

If a hearing is held and goes against the Blues, their financial breaches across three seasons would be much higher than initially thought, raising the possibility of the club being hit with new points deductions.

Further points deductions could be catastrophic for Everton

This time last year, the Toffees had just been slapped with the largest points deduction in Premier League history, for their financial breaches in the three years leading up to the 2021/22 season.

Although that 10-point penalty was reduced to six by the following February, a further two points being docked for the following season’s breaches showed that PSR issues have been systemic for the club.

With a belief that the 2023/24 campaign – in which Sean Dyche’s side stayed up comfortably despite their points deductions – will see the club avoid breaches, failing to do so would be disastrous.

The Premier League’s relegation dogfight is shaping up to be much more competitive this time around than it was last season, meaning a points deduction could land the Toffees in a heap of trouble.

Dyche’s side have already lost to bottom side Southampton as if to prove that very point, and if further points are chalked off, it remains to be seen if the 53-year-old can lift them out of the mire once more.
