Sean Dyche stuns journalist with word used in Everton press conference pre-Liverpool

Sean Dyche surprised reporter Joe Thomas with his description of his Everton side’s 4-0 win against Wolves ahead of the clash against Liverpool.

The Blues bounced back from the 4-0 loss against Manchester United by dishing out a 4-0 win of their own on Wednesday [4 December], as Ashley Young and Orel Mangala found themselves among the goals alongside two Craig Dawson own goals on the night.

Liverpool Echo reporter Thomas was taken aback by Dyche’s one-word description of the mid-week victory in his pre-match press conference [5 December] – “bouncebackability”.

He wrote for the Liverpool Echo’s online edition [5 December]: “Wow. Dyche starts with that old term ‘bouncebackability’ – talks about Everton eradicating mistakes from the game last night after what he believes was an OK display at Old Trafford.”

Everton have a chance of giving Goodison Park perfect send off v Liverpool

The match against Wolves was reminiscent of the Dyche glory days in the Premier League – when all else fails, go to set-pieces.

It may not be what the modern-day supporter wants to see, but one look further up the league table at Arsenal shows just how important dead-ball situations can be between three points and walking away empty-handed.

Everton found the back of the net 18 times last season via set-pieces, the second-highest tally in the league, but had only scored four times from a similar manner heading into the clash on Wednesday.

Therefore, in one outing, the Blues scored more goals via that means in one match than they could manage in their previous eight outings and doubled their tally from set-pieces.

It is no coincidence that the Toffees returned to winning ways using the methods that Dyche knows best, and he must once again rely on Dwight McNeil’s “perfect” deliveries to stand any chance of a historic victory against Liverpool on Saturday [9 November].

Dyche has done it before; he beat Liverpool 2-0 at Goodison Park last term, and the visitors are there for the taking – the Reds are notoriously slow starters under Arne Slot and failed to match the intensity set by Newcastle in a hostile St James’ Park. Goodison Park will undoubtedly be ready for war.

The first goalscorer could ultimately decide this match, and Everton must draw first blood, with the chance to pull further from the relegation zone and add another blow to Liverpool’s title hopes – Dyche can restore his relationship with the supporters after one 90-minute display on Saturday.
