Everton set to receive transfer windfall as exit news emerges

Everton could be set to receive a transfer windfall should Ben Godfrey leave Atalanta in January, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Merseyside news outlet reported via its website (2 January) that the Blues negotiated a sell-on clause into the £11million deal with Atalanta.

Now, the Englishman is on the chopping block in Italy and is considered “no longer key” for the Serie A outfit’s long-term vision and has been made available in the January transfer window [Fabrizio Romano].

Everton set to profit from Ben Godfrey sale

In a strange turn of events, Godfrey could find himself back in the Premier League after a short-lived stint in Italy.

The 26-year-old turned down several offers to extend his stay at Goodison Park last season as he wished to pursue a fresh challenge, only for the decision to go up in flames.

Regardless, Thelwell produced a masterclass in securing a sell-on clause in the deal and with Sean Dyche prepared to fine-tune his squad ahead of a pivotal second half of the campaign, the funds can be reinvested.

While Atalanta are likely to make a loss on the centre-back, he is still in the prime years of his career, and several struggling Premier League sides could certainly benefit from his assistance.

Dyche has built one of the best defensive units in the top division in the past few weeks, with the partnership of Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski conceding only one goal against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

A return to Goodison Park will undoubtedly be out of the equation – he must reap what he sewed, and while he made his maiden start in the Champions League with Atalanta, it is safe to say the move was a resounding failure.

Everton rarely come out on top in transfer dealings, and hopefully, for the supporters, this is a positive sign of things to come in January.
