Sean Dyche sack: Friedkin priorities emerge at Everton as pressure rises
Everton will likely look to appoint a new CEO and decide on Kevin Thelwell’s future before opting to sack Sean Dyche, Paul Brown has suggested.
The Josimar journalist posted on BlueSky (5 January) that despite a clamour for Dyche to be shown the door, Dan Friedkin’s priority is to complete his overhaul of the boardroom at Goodison Park.
Friedkin, having completed his takeover on 19 December 2024, is yet to find a new chief executive to replace interim Colin Chong long-term, while Thelwell joins Dyche in being out of contract this summer.
Brown said: “Understand [the] clamour for Dyche to go. But very unlikely to happen until Everton appoint a CEO – & Thelwell’s future is sorted. Friedkin will make those decisions first.
“The recruitment drive started before the takeover was complete – it may not be what fans want to hear but patience will be needed.”
Dan Friedkin priorities are a tough reality for Everton fans
Regardless of whoever becomes the Toffees’ new CEO, or director of football if Thelwell is shown the door, neither will be able to have much sway on the immediate results of Dyche’s side in the short-term.
Those results make for grim reading at the moment, having failed to score in eight of their last 10 games and failing to win any of the last five, since a 4-0 win over Wolves which looks increasingly like an outlier.

The Blues therefore face a vital transfer window this month given their precarious position in the Premier League table, sitting 16th and just a single point above the relegation zone.
As a result, and with the hierarchy having already drafted up three positions to address this January [Sky Sports, 1 January], making a short-term decision in the dugout is desperately needed at Goodison.
Friedkin’s list of priorities suggests that Dyche is safe in his job for now, but unless big on-field changes are made in January, the Toffees’ new owners risk time passing them by in delaying such a vital decision.
