Everton transfers: Ally McCoist shares new ‘Catch-22’ for signings

Everton face a difficult transfer window this month with top players hesitant to join a relegation battle, Ally McCoist has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (6 January, 8:56am), McCoist argued that the Toffees’ biggest problem before the window shuts will be finding players who are both fresh and better than their current options.

The Blues currently sit 16th in the Premier League, just a point clear of the drop zone, with Dan Friedkin’s new-look hierarchy targeting three key positions to strengthen this month [Sky Sports, 1 January].

McCoist said: “That’s one of the problems Everton will be faced with as well. [In] January, they need a freshness, but at the same time, who are you going to attract?

“It’s a kind of [a] catch-22 because of where you are – there’s a serious option of maybe being relegated, who are they going to attract?”

Everton and Sean Dyche face crucial January transfer window

With Dyche’s side sitting precariously above the precipice in the Premier League, adding reinforcements to his squad is a must if the Toffees are to retain their status ahead of a crucial summer period.

Moving into their new home on Bramley-Moore Dock as a second-tier club would be a disastrous and unthinkable prospect for Evertonians, making January 2025 make-or-break for their future prospects.

Friedkin’s takeover may be set to steady the financial ship on Merseyside after years of haphazard ownership under Farhad Moshiri, but that doesn’t mean a bottomless pit of money to spend this month.

Signing a forward option or two to aid the Blues’ issues in front of goal certainly wouldn’t go amiss, and the chances of them doing so will be boosted once the out-of-favour Beto completes his move to Italy [Giacomo Morandin, 5 January].

Dyche’s previous reluctance to make use of his new signings must come to an end if the Toffees’ form is to pick up any time soon, but this means that any January arrivals simply have to hit the ground running.
