Man City set for 100 points deduction after Everton precedent – Expert

Kieran Maguire believes Manchester City could be deducted up to 100 points after how Everton were punished by the Premier League last season.

The Toffees were dealt two separate deductions by the league organisers due to financial breaches but still managed to avoid relegation under Sean Dyche.

The financial focus has now switched to the Citizens who have been charged by the Premier League for 115 alleged breaches of the league’s financial rules.

Speaking on The Overlap (7 January), Maguire has shared his belief that Pep Guardiola’s side could be hit with a 100-point punishment after what happened at Goodison last year.

He said: “Actually, there’s three charges, it’s not 115. Has money come in from the owners? If that is the case then that is fraud, that is about as serious as it gets. If found guilty of those charges then the book will be thrown at Manchester City and it’s going to be a massive points deduction.

“You can’t relegate them because the Premier League and the EFL are independent bodies so the EFL doesn’t have to accept them. Given that the Forest and Everton points deductions, they were both described by the commission as being minor breaches.

“Well, what Manchester City are being accused of is major breaches over a nine to 10-year period. You would be looking at somewhere in the region of 60 to 100 points.”

Manchester City could face 100-point deduction after Everton precedent

The Premier League arguably used the Goodison club as an example to every other club in the division to warn them off breaching these financial restrictions.

This arguably worked to an extent with the likes of Aston Villa, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United all engaging in transfers between clubs during the last summer window.

In recent months, there has been little news of other clubs dealing with potential PSR punishments other than Manchester City.

Given how harshly the Toffees were treated last season, it would only be fair that the eight-time Premier League champions suffer a punishment in line with the one faced at Goodison.

If Maguire is right in his thinking, this could be the case and the 34 points that City have now could be stripped while also losing a further 66 potentially.

This would almost certainly leave Guardiola and Co. on route to the Championship which would only be fair if they are found to be breaking the rules during their period of great success.
