David Moyes agrees Everton return as breaking news emerges

David Moyes has agreed to return to Everton to succeed Sean Dyche, according to Graeme Bailey.

The TBR Football journalist reported via X (9 January) that the ex-Blues boss has agreed on a second spell on Merseyside on an initial short-term deal until the summer.

Everton removed Dyche as head coach on Thursday (9 January), only hours before he was set to lead the side to face Peterborough United in the FA Cup third-round tie at Goodison Park.

Everton will replace Sean Dyche with David Moyes

It has certainly been a tumultuous 24 hours for Everton fans.

The match against Peterborough United has yet to kick off, and The Friedkin Group has already agreed to a new manager to replace Dyche at the helm.

Less than 30 minutes after initial reports emerged that Moyes would enter into talks with the Blues regarding a sensational return to Goodison Park [The Bobble], he is set to be instated for his second spell.

Former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho was believed to be on the shortlist, but as David Ornstein reports (9 January), his strained relationship with TFG means no move will transpire.

While Dyche can leave Everton with his head held high after guiding his side away from two relegation battles – it makes sense for TFG to take action with only a point buffer to the relegation zone.

Furthermore, choosing to appoint Moyes, a cult hero in the Blue half of Merseyside, is precisely what the disgruntled Everton faithful need to lift the atmosphere ahead of another monumental relegation scrap.

Even though it is initially on a short-term basis, all the Blues supporters will be behind Moyes until the end of the season, and should he repeat his Europa Conference League heroics with West Ham United, he will be a shoo-in for the permanent position.
