Dyche fall-out: Souness lashes out at what Everton players did to sacked manager

Graeme Souness has slammed the experienced Everton players for getting Sean Dyche sacked at Goodison Park.

The Toffees announced the 53-year-old’s departure just hours before their FA Cup clash against Peterborough United on Thursday 9 January, with Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman taking charge.

David Moyes looks set to be the man to replace him, an appointment which could be confirmed within the next 24 hours [David Ornstein], but many are still questioning The Friedkin Group’s decision to let Dyche go.

Writing via Mail Plus [10 January], Souness said: “There are five players there in Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Seamus Coleman, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who have worked under four managers in five years, some of them have had even more.

“That’s not a statistic they or any of their teammates should be proud of. Too many players today, when they see a manager sacked, shrug their shoulders and say: ‘It’s got nothing to do with me.’

“It makes me so angry. How can you not go home, look in the mirror and think: ‘Am I not part of the problem?’ I wonder if any of these Everton players lie awake at night and ask if could I have done more.”

Sean Dyche unfairly treated after Everton sack?

Souness has brought up some rather interesting points, especially when it comes to the ability and work ethic of the players currently in the squad.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto are the first figures who come to mind, with the Toffees struggling to hit the back of the net for the last few campaigns, and that is the main reason why Dyche has been sacked.

Dyche’s defensive work is often impeccable, with only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool conceding fewer goals last season, and any defensive frailties this term seem to have been solved.

The attacking third of the pitch is definitely the issue. Only Southampton have scored fewer goals than the Blues this term, highlighting exactly where TFG need to improve during the January window.

Supporters will never know what Dyche could have achieved under the new owners, with the backing of proper funds behind him, but the club must now look ahead and move on.
