Moyes return: BBC journo shares what ‘well-placed Everton source’ has told him

David Moyes is the frontrunner for the Everton job in news emanating from a “well-placed source”, according to Dan Roan.

The BBC Sport editor (10 January) revealed that Moyes is leading the charge to succeed Sean Dyche at Goodison Park, in a stunning return to the club he left in 2013 after an 11-year innings.

The Scotsman has been out of management since leaving West Ham United in May 2024, and although the nature of his exit to Manchester United still divides Evertonian opinion, he is in line to be The Friedkin Group’s first hire.

Sky Sports reported on Friday afternoon (10 January, 12:50) that Moyes is thrashing out the details of a contract back on Merseyside which will last for “at least two years”.

Roan stated: “David Moyes is in talks with Everton over a potential return to Goodison Park after the sacking of manager Sean Dyche.

“While a deal is not yet done, and Moyes is not the only candidate, BBC Sport has been told by a well-placed source that the Scot is the frontrunner.

“Negotiations over a contract are set to continue on Friday.”

Everton set to welcome Moyes back to Goodison

In a remarkable turn of events, it appears that Moyes will once again become Everton manager.

The 61-year-old spent over a decade with the Toffees and guided them to a top-four Premier League finish in 2005, regularly featuring in Europe as a consistent top-flight force.

It seems now that TFG are attempting to reinvigorate those days by welcoming back the club stalwart as a new chapter on Merseyside gets underway, with Sean Dyche unable to last the full term of a contract which was expiring at the end of this season.

Some fans may be split on how they feel over Moyes’ return to Goodison, but a few improved results would undoubtedly see a harmonious unison among the support which has not always been present through turbulent recent events.

Following their FA Cup win over Peterborough United on Thursday night (9 January), the Toffees next take on Aston Villa in the Premier League on home turf (15 January) – and Moyes could be the man at the helm for the first time since a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on 19 May 2013.
