Richard Keys launches staggering attack on Ferguson after Everton controversy

Richard Keys has blasted Darren Ferguson after he failed to bring on Tyler Young against his dad Ashley Young during the FA Cup tie between Everton and Peterborough United.

Everton’s veteran defender Young, 39, was brought on in the 73rd minute of the game as his side overcame their League One opponents 2-0 at Goodison Park but his son failed to make an appearance from the bench.

Peterborough boss Ferguson has defended his decision as his side were only 1-0 down until the 98th minute meaning he didn’t want to bring a defensive midfielder onto the pitch.

However, beIN SPORTS presenter Keys does not agree with the decision that was made as he posted on X (10 January): “There’s no defence for the decision Darren Ferguson made last night. None at all.

“We all wanted to witness that little piece of history. How sad a nepo baby let it pass.”

Everton beat Peterborough in the FA Cup

As Keys says, it was disappointing that Tyler Young didn’t get onto the pitch from the subs bench as it would have been a great moment to see father versus son during the game and Ashley Young has shared his thoughts after the match.

However, this feels like an unfair attack on Ferguson who, while being Alex Ferguson’s son did make his way in football off his own managerial abilities rather than purely his dad’s name.

Furthermore, as the manager pointed out following the game, he had a job to do and at 1-0 down it would have been a questionable decision to bring on a defensive midfielder when The Posh were surely seeking for an equaliser themselves.

Although there was an opportunity for a run out at the end of the game once it was 2-0, Ferguson had already used his five substitutions meaning there was nothing else he could do.

While it would have been a great moment to see, you can understand the reasoning of the Peterborough boss and maybe the attention should turn to the Blues who didn’t get themselves further ahead sooner in the game.
