Sean Dyche baffles with Everton statement claim

Andy Dunn has been left baffled by Sean Dyche after he claimed he’d left Everton in “good shape” upon his exit from the club.

Dyche departed Goodison Park on 9 January, ahead of the Toffees’ FA Cup tie against Peterborough United, and David Moyes swiftly came in as his successor.

The departing statement from Everton wasn’t the most sentimental although the 53-year-old himself sent a classy message regarding his exit.

However, Dunn was left questioning one key part of this as he wrote in the print edition of The Daily Mirror (17 January, page 55): “Sean Dyche deserves the gratitude of Everton fans for keeping the club in the top flight over the last couple of seasons.

“And this parting statement was typically dignified. But what about this? ‘The right time has come to leave the club, with the team in good shape.’ Good shape? Good shape?

“Everton have won one of their last 12 Premier League games, the four goals scored against Wolves accounting for two-thirds of the six goals scored in those dozen matches. Across those fixtures, they have averaged three attempts on target per game.

“Everton is a team that is not in good shape. It is in rotten shape and you have to wonder if David Moyes truly knows what he’s letting himself in for.”

David Moyes has a big job on his hands at Everton

There is no doubt that Dyche faced difficult circumstances during his tenure on Merseyside and therefore what he was able to achieve with his team rightfully gets a lot of credit.

However, it was clear that the Toffees were struggling this term with a poor style of play and poor results wearing thin on many supporters.

Furthermore, the takeover of the Blues by The Friedkin Group put the club in a good position for a change to be made in order to mark a new era at the club.

As Dunn says, despite deserving some credit, the English manager’s claim that the team were left in good shape is somewhat baffling given the Blues find themselves sitting just one point above the relegation zone and with few results to suggest they have what it takes to stay up.

Nevertheless, the return of Moyes will surely have provided a boost around Goodison and the manager will need the backing of the new owners to ensure they leave their stadium as a top-flight outfit.
