Sutton shocked after what he saw Calvert-Lewin do for Everton on MOTD – ‘Blimey’

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is playing for Everton like he has the “weight of the world on his shoulders”, according to Chris Sutton.

After watching BBC Match of the Day footage, the pundit is of the view that the England international could have had a brace in the Toffees’ 1-0 loss against Aston Villa on Wednesday (15 January) had it not been for his hesitation.

The former Celtic star is shocked that the Merseyside-based club have only scored 15 goals in the Premier League this season and mooted relegation trouble for David Moyes if he continues relying on Calvert-Lewin.

“Just watching Match of the Day and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, he looks like who has the weight of the world on his shoulders”, Sutton said on Daily Mail’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast (16 January).

“He looks hesitant, he could have had a couple of goals.

“In fairness, Aston Villa deserved to win the game, they had some big opportunities they didn’t take, they were wasteful.

“But, you can’t get away from the fact if David Moyes is relying on Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the rest of the season, then they could be in a bit of bother.

“I still think that they have a good enough squad to stay in the Premier League, but blimey, 15 measly goals this season.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggle continues, David Moyes needs new striker at Everton

There are no doubts about Calvert-Lewin’s abilities, and in fairness, the performance against Villa was one of his better ones this season.

However, two goals from 20 league outings is simply unacceptable from any starting centre-forward in the English top-flight.

It makes one wonder if Calvert-Lewin is affected by his contract situation, having entered the final six months of his deal at Goodison Park.

It looks increasingly likely that the England international will leave Everton at the end of the season.

The barren run, though, also appears to have taken a toll on the 27-year-old, as Sutton said.

Armando Broja struggling to stay fit and Beto being unconvincing have not helped the situation at the Merseyside-based club.

Therefore, Moyes needs to try and sign a new centre-forward in the ongoing winter transfer window to take some pressure off Calvert-Lewin.

The Toffees, though, may have to either send Broja back to Chelsea or offload Beto to facilitate the signing of a new striker.
