Kevin Thelwell ‘left red-faced’ at Everton as Rensch transfer destination made

Kevin Thelwell has been left red-faced at Everton after another publicly failed transfer pursuit.

The Blues sporting director has received praise over the past week, as the Premier League announced that no side will face further PSR sanctions for the 2023/24 period.

However, his position at Goodison Park is far from safe. As per The Esk (12 January), Thelwell is expected to follow Sean Dyche out the door, with David Moyes playing an influential role in the impending change.

Now, the decision on Merseyside will be far more straightforward after Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday (20 January) that reported Everton transfer target Devyne Rensch will complete a move to another outfit in The Friedkin Group portfolio, AS Roma.

While the 3-2 win against Tottenham on Sunday (20 January) marked a monumental step in the right direction under Moyes, there is no escaping that the squad must be strengthened before the 3 February deadline.

Thelwell is under pressure to prove to TFG that he is capable of leading the recruitment ahead of what promises to be a pivotal transformation under the new regime.

However, as a reignited move for Ernest Nuamah lies dead in the water, the sporting director has been hit with another sucker punch as Rensch chooses a move to Serie A over the Premier League.

Before any Evertonians moot the possibility of Dan Friedkin showing his allegiance, each club has leaders in place to organise transfer activity, and the snub is Thelwell’s fault alone.

Ajax director Alex Kroes gave the Toffees the green light to pursue the transfer for a player ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag predicted to have an “amazing” career (Goal, 6 April 2021) but failed to convince the defender of a move to Goodison Park.

Furthermore, Roma are acquiring the 21-year-old at a steal in a £5million deal for a player with all the tools to develop into a top-level talent.

The only way out for Thelwell now is to find an equally impressive value-for-money deal for Everton, but with less than half the transfer window remaining, time is running out.
