Everton transfer news as Marcus Edwards to Goodison Park update shared
Everton have inquired into the signing of Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards, according to Jaque Talbot.
The journalist, who has featured for The Guardian, reported via his X account [21 January] that the Toffees are interested in the 26-year-old talent, someone who came through Tottenham’s academy.
It is understood that the Englishman has just 18 months left on his current deal with the Portuguese giants, having been without the club since January 2022, and could be a potential arrival on Merseyside.
“Understand Everton have inquired after Marcus Edwards of Sporting CP. The 26-year-old has just 18 months left on his deal at the Estadio Jose Alvalade,” he wrote.
Everton to secure deal for Marcus Edwards?
The 26-year-old has experienced a whirlwind of a career since leaving North London in September 2019, leaving to join Vitoria de Guimaraes, where he scored 20 goals in 95 games.
That was enough for Sporting to sit up and take notice, with the winger now playing alongside the famous Viktor Gyokeres, who already has 22 league goals this season, helping the club to win the league last season.
The Swedish international has, of course, taken the majority of the spotlight, but he would be absolutely nowhere without the players around him, and Edwards is one of those talents.
Edwards, who was originally born in London, has notched an impressive record of 24 goals and 26 assists in 120 matches for Sporting, but his game time has seriously diminished this season.
He has only started one Liga Portugal game this season, with the likes of Trincao, Conrad Harder and Geovany Quenda being chosen ahead of him, which could force him to seek an exit.
With his ability to play on either flank, he would be an incredible addition to David Moyes’ team, especially with Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom not stamping their mark on the right flank.
It remains to be seen how much a deal like this would set the Toffees back, but with 18 months left on his contract, Sporting might think about cashing in before he leaves for free next summer.
