Everton player shares how squad felt after ‘Ruthless’ Dyche sack
Asmir Begovic admits the squad were left feeling “sad” after the “ruthless” decision to sack Sean Dyche as Everton manager..
Although things were seemingly looking up for the Toffees under new ownership at Goodison Park, the positive changes off the pitch were struggling to translate to improvement on it.
As a result, The Friedkin Group made the decision to part ways with Dyche, while the former boss admitted he felt he had gone as far as he could with his Blues side.
Speaking on the Seaman Says podcast (21 January, 14:47), back-up goalkeeper Begovic provided insight into how things were among the team, saying: “I’ve got a lot of respect for Sean.
“Over the two years, you think about the circumstances. A points deduction, which is so unheard of in the Premier League.
“It’s a results-based business. We had a bad couple of results against two teams that were flying in Forest and Bournemouth.
“Before then I thought we were solid but things change quickly and the club had a certain feeling. That’s the ruthless side of the business, decisions have to be made, and it was difficult to see him go, we were all sad and we take a lot of responsibility for that.”
Everton players need to step up for David Moyes
Begovic isn’t wrong when he acknowledges the job that Dyche did in difficult circumstances over recent times and it was clear that the players bought into his belief, which allowed them to save themselves.
However, things have been bleak this term and while there have been some good results along the way, the table was not making good reading for the Toffees showing the levels needed to be raised.

After what has been a long and taxing period both on and off the pitch, it’s no surprise that the manager felt he had run out of steam and based on Begovic’s comments, it seems as though the squad reflected this feeling.
That being said, as the Toffees beat Tottenham 3-2 on Sunday (19 January), the standards looked much higher showing these players could do enough to keep their side where they need to be.
With David Moyes now back at the helm on the blue half of Merseyside, the players owe it to their new boss and their supporters to deliver the levels of performance that will secure their position in the top flight.
In other Everton news, the Toffees have reportedly made an approach for a Monaco star after their Champions League win against Aston Villa.
