Kevin Thelwell ‘produces rare transfer masterclass’ at Everton amid £10m deal
Tom Cannon finalised an exit from Leicester City in order to join Sheffield United and Everton have Kevin Thelwell to thank for the expected windfall.
Cannon departed Everton in the summer of 2023 in favour of a move to Leicester City and the ex-Toffees striker has been on the move again, completing a move to Sheffield United on Thursday (23 January).
Everton received an initial £7.5million for his sale to the Foxes but are in line to receive further financial windfall after it was revealed Thelwell included a sell-on clause in the deal, which will see the Toffees receive 25 per cent of the profit made following his latest £10m move [The Athletic].
The Toffees will be in line to receive a windfall in the region of £700,000, which is a welcome boost with less than two weeks of the winter transfer window to go.
Thelwell deserves credit for Tom Cannon Everton sell-on clause
First and foremost, the deal that saw him leave for the Foxes was good enough at face value with Everton essentially getting £7.5m for a player who had little-to-no future at Goodison Park.
It was off the back of a successful loan spell at Preston, with Cannon then going on to struggle for game time at Leicester, who themselves will be happy to have profited from the deal as well.

While a six-figure fee may not seem a lot for Everton, it’s small clauses like this that can have a huge impact going forward if those successes can be repeated. On this rare occasion, Thelwell certainly deserves credit for his role in the deal and indeed the sell-on clause.
Of course, one success doesn’t define a tenure and Thelwell has certainly been at fault for many transfer failings, but just like people will point those out, it’s just as important to praise the good work where necessary.
