Premier League make official statement on Brighton v Everton controversy

The Premier League have released a statement following Everton scoring a penalty against Brighton at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday.

David Moyes’ men were awarded a penalty after VAR stepped in following Joel Veltman handling the ball, with Iliman Ndiaye opening the scoring from the spot on 25 January.

The Premier League match centre shared that the VAR deemed the action from Veltman as deliberate, despite complaints about the pressure from Beto, who replaced Dominic Calvert-Lewin early.

They wrote on X: “VAR overturn.

“The VAR checked for a potential penalty for handball by Veltman and deemed it as a deliberate action and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee then awarded a penalty to Everton.”

Premier League release new Everton statement

Finally, it is great to see a decision go the way of Everton.

Fans and everybody at the Goodison club are fed up with it going the other way and having to deal with statements which do nothing to paper over what had happened previously.

Football is a contact sport, and Veltman clearly tried to earn his side a free kick under pressure, but all he did was concede a clear penalty for batting the ball away.

Beto has been heavily linked with the exit door before the 3 February deadline, but with Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja now both injured, he is the only option for Moyes.

His physicality is always an issue for opposition defenders and if the new manager can instil some confidence into his game, he will have a huge role to play.

It was a great start after coming on the bench at the AMEX Stadium, and he must now continue that in the second half to pick up another vital three points.
