Premier League ‘must seek approval’ after Brighton controversy v Everton

Brighton showing a replay of Joel Veltman giving a penalty away against Everton is against Premier League protocol, Keith Hackett says.

The Toffees left the AMEX Stadium with all three points in a 1-0 win on 25 January, with Iliman Ndiaye scoring from the spot after Veltman’s handball.

VAR deemed the action of the defender as deliberate, but fans were left raging by replays on the screen, with the Premier League needing to gain approval from the IFAB for that to happen.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, the ex-PGMOL chief and FIFA referee shared what must happen before replays can be shown on the big screen.

Showing controversial incidents on the big screen is against the protocol,” Hackett said.

“This is one for the Premier League to resolve.

“If it wants these to be shown then they must change the protocol and seek approval from the IFAB.”

Premier League to seek approval after Everton controversy

David Moyes could not have wished for a better week.

After smashing Tottenham only to concede two late goals to 3-2, the Toffees have followed it up with a clean sheet and huge three points on the south coast.

With Ipswich, Wolves, Southampton and Leicester in disarray, Everton look to have battled themselves back to safety in the Premier League with ease.

Brighton fans may have been outraged, but it was deliberate, it was a penalty and Ndiaye sealed all three points to send his side seven points clear of the bottom three.
