David Moyes mocked after Everton win v Brighton, Chris Sutton hits back
Chris Sutton defended David Moyes as Everton were mocked for the manner of victory against Brighton in the Premier League.
Daily Mail journalist Ian Ladyman compared the Scottish manager to Sean Dyche and laughed at suggestions of the result being a “masterclass” as the Toffees beat Brighton 1-0 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday (25 January).
Sutton jumped to Moyes’ defence and felt the criticism against him was unfair.
Speaking on the Daily Mail’s It’s All Kicking Off (27 January), Ladyman said: “It made me laugh because that’s exactly what Dyche was doing. He was winning really boring games with a penalty. And all of a sudden, because it’s Moyes, it’s a ‘masterclass’.
Sutton responded: “There’s always been a stigma surrounding Moyes that he’s a bit of a dinosaur. I never felt that.
“We look at Everton as a basketcase club at this moment in time. He’s had a great start, but I’ve always felt because of what happened at Manchester United, he keeps getting smacked with the same old stick, which is deeply unfair.”
David Moyes deserves respect after Everton win v Brighton
The Scotsman returned to Goodison Park at a time when they were just one point ahead of the relegation zone.
After the Toffees beat Tottenham and the Seagulls in the last two matches, they find themselves seven points above 18th-place Wolves in the Premier League.
While the style of play under Moyes hasn’t drastically changed compared to how Dyche set up the team, the fans are excited about the positive results.
Everton have won back-to-back games in the English top flight for the first time this season, and the 61-year-old head coach deserves all the credit.

The Merseyside outfit looked in realistic danger of going down to the Championship under Dyche, but the atmosphere around Goodison has changed dramatically in recent weeks.
Moyes knows the Blues inside out, so it’s no surprise that he has managed to get the best out of the squad, which was supposedly not good enough in the first half of the campaign.
The supporters won’t care about witnessing boring football as long as the Scottish manager can secure the Toffees’ Premier League status before their move to Bramley-Moore Dock.
