Chris Sutton makes ‘Massive’ admission in Everton v Leicester prediction

Chris Sutton is backing Everton to beat Leicester City this weekend despite the Foxes picking up a “massive” win over Tottenham.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side ran out 2-1 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last Sunday, a day after the Toffees were 1-0 victors at Brighton.

David Moyes has now overseen back-to-back victories and Sutton, writing his BBC Sport predictions (30 January), thinks they will rack up another 1-0 win despite Leicester ending a barren run last time out.

“Both of these teams got good wins last week, but it’s hard to know what to make of Leicester beating Tottenham because of the spell Spurs are going through.,” he wrote.

“I don’t see that result as meaning the Foxes have turned a corner, but it was massive for them after seven straight league defeats.

“What a player Leicester striker Jamie Vardy is by the way. He seems to be getting quicker, at the age of 38, and is still scoring really important goals for them.

“It was Everton’s victory at Brighton that impressed me the most, though.

“They are still not going to be free-scoring but the centre-back partnership between James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite, with Jordan Pickford behind them, has given new boss David Moyes the foundation he wants.

“I am backing them to edge this game too, which would give Moyes a hat-trick of wins and a bit of breathing space over the bottom four. Prediction: 1-0.”

Everton can see off Leicester City

There were concerns from some about whether Moyes would be able to create a change upon his return to Goodison Park but it’s safe to say he will have put many of those worries to rest.

There is still plenty of football to be played but if the Toffees can carry on in the form they have shown so far under their boss, the future will surely be looking brighter.

Leicester did get a good victory against Tottenham although the Lilywhites are a side that are well out of form at this stage so, as Sutton says, this isn’t necessarily reflective of where the Foxes are going forward.

The Blues on the other hand could add a third win in a row against Leicester will surely help build the momentum to go forward in the remainder of the campaign and keep themselves as a top-flight side.

The defensive work at Goodison this term has been up to a better standard throughout so the challenge now is getting the same levels of performance delivered at the top end of the field on a regular basis.
