Everton make approach to sign Ferguson as ‘firm favourites’ named

Everton have asked Brighton about the availability of Evan Ferguson before the 3 February transfer deadline, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist reported to TBR Football on 31 January that West Ham have emerged as “firm favourites” to sign the Republic of Ireland international from the Seagulls.

Chelsea have also shown interest while the Toffees have made enquiries over the availability of the 20-year-old this month.

If David Moyes wants to push a deal over the line, the temporary deal for Jack Harrison would have to be cancelled to free up a loan slot for the highly rated striker who Gary Lineker once compared to Erling Haaland.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football [September 2023], he said: “He’s got it all, hasn’t he? You never know really completely with young players as things can happen in your life or injuries.

“His movement, his finishing… he’s got a tiny hint of Haaland. He’s a big lad, strong, quick, good finisher who looks unfazed by everything.”

There is a real need for a new number nine on Merseyside before the winter window slams shut in the coming days.

This comes after Dominic Calvert-Lewin suffered an injury which will rule him out and leave Beto as the only senior striker to be fit.

With both Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti also sidelined, the hierarchy at Goodison must move quickly to fill this hole at Goodison.

Without depth in the strike role for the rest of the campaign, there may be further issues lying in wait for Moyes if additional injuries hit his squad.

As a result, a move to bring Ferguson in with the promise of regular first-team minutes could benefit both parties as the Toffees move forward.

The Irishman has struggled for game time this year under Fabian Hurzeler and has spent the winter window linked with various sides in the Premier League and in Europe.

If the Friedkins want to make a statement and back Moyes, bringing the young striker in would be exactly that.
