David Moyes ‘to tap into TFG’s resources’ after short-term Everton deal

Everton’s immediate future has been one of the main stories to have emerged from the Premier League in recent years.

At the start of the current 2024/25 season, fans were left wondering where their future could lie with Farhad Moshiri not managing to find a buyer for his stake in the Merseyside outfit.

However, once the Friedkin Group’s name was mentioned in the takeover talks, things seemed to get a little bit brighter in the blue half of Merseyside.

While not all that much was done in the winter window regarding new arrivals for the team, it certainly feels like they’re going to finish the season in a better place than when they started, especially with David Moyes at the helm.

Because, since his arrival, Everton have gone from a team who didn’t know what a goal was to a team that can put four past one of their relegation rivals.

Carlos Alcaraz signing gives ‘short-term’ Everton boost

Even though the Friedkins have only owned Everton for a short period of time, it already feels like they’ve been making a positive impact.

On the face of things, the Toffees’ squad do with a massive overhaul with new players needed across the board.

However, due to their previous PSR woes, they’ve had to be quite stringent and only choose very specific targets which is why Liverpool ECHO journalist Joe Thomas believes that Alcaraz is seen as a “short-term” fix to try and keep them in the top flight.

Because, at the end of the day, it was Everton’s attack that needed strengthening the most in winter.

“In the short term there is hope that Alcaraz will be enough to help a small but battle-hardened squad continue to pull away from trouble,” Thomas wrote via the newspaper’s website (7 February).

“Should it do so then the summer will represent a sea change, the new financial year that begins on July 1 should signal the start of a summer in which Moyes can tap into TFG’s resources and rebuild a squad that currently stands to lose 15 players.

“The increased revenue offered by the new stadium and the boosted commercial deals linked to it should also make spending money on the squad sustainable, so long as it is sensible.”

The Friedkin Group needs to make sensible transfers for the Toffees

Alcaraz being the only winter arrival may have been a bit disappointing for Everton fans but it at least shows that the Friedkin’s are trying to be sensible with where they spend their money.

As, that’s one thing Moshiri wasn’t. The Iranian businessman seemed to splash cash like there was no tomorrow which is why they found themselves in a whole world of PSR trouble at Everton last season.

However, it was evident that something needed to change at Goodison Park which is why the sale of players such as Ben Godfrey and Amadou Onana were sanctioned.

Every club no matter what league they’re in should be looking to sell players at a profit and then be able to source replacements who are better and cheaper than the players they’ve just shipped out.

If Everton want to get back to their glory days under Moyes, spending needs to be sensible, rather than over-the-top.
