Everton boost as Mykolenko latest set to nullify Liverpool threat

Everton could enjoy an excellent boost following the news Vitaliy Mykolenko is in contention to return against Liverpool.

The Ukrainian missed the FA Cup fourth round defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday (8 February) through a calf injury but is in line to make a comeback for the final-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Mykolenko has had his doubters but has produced some much-improved performances under David Moyes as he proves his credentials as a long-term Premier League full-back.

Mykolenko has made himself vital to Everton

Mykolenko has been an ever-present in recent weeks and months until missing the Bournemouth tie, which witnessed a massive drop in defensive standards in his absence.

Even towards the end of Sean Dyche’s reign, the 25-year-old’s displays increased in standard, and he will need to be at his absolute best if he features in the derby.

The leading scorer and current best-performing player in the Premier League, Mo Salah, will be operating down his wing in the week after being rested for Liverpool’s FA Cup exit to Plymouth Argyle.

Mykolenko and Salah will both be fresh and ready to go in what will have to be a world-class showdown, and David Moyes will see it vital that the encouraging performances of his left-back will show no sign of stopping after missing a game.

The momentum should still be there for a player increased in confidence, who has previously admitted facing Salah is a “scary” prospect (Liverpool.com) but will be buoyed by the Toffees crowd in L4.

Liverpool visit for final-ever Goodison derby

It will be an emotional day on Merseyside as blue and red face off for the last-ever time on the Goodison turf.

There could be a few tears shed, and Everton fans and Moyes alike will be sincerely hoping they are purely down to the emotion of the occasion, rather than the result.

The Toffees were incredible towards the end of last season to overcome the red corner at Goodison, and will be working towards a similar level of performance to bounce back from dipping out of the cup.

Originally set for 7 December but falling victim to inclement weather from Storm Darragh, the two city rivals with a unique relationship now take to the field in what is sure to be a memorable evening no matter what.
