Virgil van Dijk takes swipe at Everton straight after Merseyside derby scenes

Virgil van Dijk has aimed a sly dig at Everton after their 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Wednesday.

The Toffees faced off against their arch-rivals on 12 February and while the Reds were the ones on the front foot for most of the second-half, Everton managed to etch out a draw and earnt themselves a valuable point.

Despite the game being fairly end-to-end throughout, it was the end-of-game scenes at Goodison Park that will likely take most of the limelight due to the fist-fight that broke out between Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure after James Tarkowski netted the equalising goal.

Even though a draw was likely a fair result for both teams, Liverpool captain Van Dijk couldn’t help but aim a sly dig towards Everton after what happened.

While the fight initially started between Jones and Doucoure, it eventually ended up with most players from both teams taking part and getting themselves in the mix.

This then resulted in four red cards being shown at the end of the clash with Arne Slot, Jones, Doucoure and Sipke Hulshoff all being given their marching orders for their involvement in the tussle.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game (12 February), Liverpool captain Van Dijk shared his thoughts on the way that the Toffees celebrated their 2-2 draw.

“We all know this is their cup final,” he said. “They will make it as difficult as possible for us.”

David Moyes is the best thing that could have happened to Everton

Even though a fair few fans and pundits alike were calling the Friedkin Group silly for ridding the Toffees of Sean Dyche before the end of the 2024/25 campaign, it could end up being one of the best moves they could have made.

Dyche is known to be a Premier League survival specialist and after the turmoil he got them through last season, some felt like he was the right man to lead Everton for the rest of the season.

However, since Moyes was brought back, everything at Everton has seemed to align with the Merseyside outfit now able to string more than two or three passes together and actually find the back of the net more than once per game.

The Scotsman has revolutionised things at Goodison Park and to be quite frank, it doesn’t feel like there’s anyone better suited to lead the Toffees into their new era at the Bramley Moore-Dock Stadium next term.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Everton but if they continue playing like they did against Liverpool each week, they could end the campaign in the top half of the table.
