Carragher ‘to look ridiculous’ after what he’s said about Crystal Palace and Everton

Everton will head to Crystal Palace on Saturday evening in buoyant mood after their 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Wednesday’s derby – played at Goodison Park for the final time before Everton move to Bramley-Moore Dock – was one for the history books; the Blues drawing 2-2 after James Tarkowski’s last-gasp strike.

Rearranged from its initially scheduled date of 7 December due to the effects of Storm Darragh across Liverpool, a midweek night under the lights of the Grand Old Lady proved to be the perfect setting.

However, the Toffees face a quick turnaround ahead of their next match as a result, and heading into Saturday’s meeting with Crystal Palace, Jamie Carragher doesn’t have high hopes for David Moyes’ side.

Jamie Carragher makes baffling Crystal Palace v Everton prediction

Previewing six of the weekend’s upcoming matches for Sky Sports’ Super6 (13 February), Carragher predicted that Palace would beat the Toffees 2-1 in Saturday evening’s meeting at Selhurst Park.

Although Carragher failed to provide commentary for rationale behind three of his predictions, he did give an explanation as to why Liverpool – whom Everton faced on Wednesday – will beat Wolves 3-1.

Carragher said: “Liverpool have enough days to recover from the Merseyside derby. They need three points with two tough away games coming up.”

Everton can make Jamie Carragher look ridiculous v Crystal Palace

Carragher clearly didn’t both to crack open a history book – or even check the statistics – ahead of Saturday’s match, making his prediction of a 2-1 win for Palace look absolutely ridiculous.

The Eagles have won just one of their last 20 Premier League games against Everton according to Opta; beating them 3-1 at Selhurst Park in December 2021, and losing 10 of the other meetings.

That’s a record which won’t convince even the most optimistic of Palace fans – let alone an allegedly impartial commentator – and it’s clear Carragher wants to see the Blues lose after Wednesday’s result.

Although Liverpool’s next match comes on Sunday afternoon compared to the Blues’ on Saturday evening, Moyes will still feel that his side have enough recovery time ahead of their trip to South London.

Moyes will have to find a solution at number 10 following Abdoulaye Doucoure’s red card after the final whistle on Wednesday, but that could already be answered in the form of new signing Carlos Alcaraz.

Carragher, however, may have to eat his words if history repeats itself at Selhurst Park, and hopefully that’ll discourage him from making such outlandish predictions in the future.
