David Weir return now on the cards as fresh Everton update emerges
Everton are looking to transform everything under the Friedkin Group after years of mismanagement under Farhad Moshiri.
While David Moyes may have reinvigorated the playing squad, it still feels like a lot more needs to be done before the Toffees get to the level they’re expected to be at.
It’s not only on the pitch where things have gone wrong either as, even though the winter transfer window has only just shut, it feels like Everton didn’t make enough improvements.
Kevin Thelwell is one of those in charge of the Toffees’ transfers in his director of football role and even though he’s had to guide them through some rather tough times, he likely should have done better.
Thelwell’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season and with the new owners coming in alongside no mention of talks being ignited, it feels like this could be the end of his time with Everton.
Kevin Thelwell could lose his Everton job
Last season was arguably one of the toughest times in the Toffees’ history when looking at things in a monetary sense.
Everton were deducted points on two separate occasions due to two breaches of the Premier League’s PSR rules and with the new era under The Friedkin Group now underway, it’s not that much of a surprise to see his future being discussed.
The Telegraph has now reported (12 February) that former Everton player David Weir is one of Dan Friedkin’s “chief targets” to replace Thelwell.

The Friedkin Group need to do what’s best for Everton
Since taking over from Moshiri earlier in the season, it feels like the Friedkins have made all the right choices regarding which path to take Everton.
Many thought their idea to relieve Sean Dyche of his duties was a mistake due to his history of being a Premier League survival specialist.
However, since Moyes was re-hired, it’s been made abundantly clear that the former Burnley boss was holding the Merseyside outfit back with his repressive tactics.
Everton now look like a team who can string more than two passes together and after their performance against Liverpool in the last-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday where they drew 2-2, it’s clear that the future is bright for the club.
Only time will tell whether Thelwell ends up getting replaced, but, the fact that Weir was Moyes’ captain during his first spell with the Toffees, makes it feel like the odds are more in the Scotsman’s favour than Thelwell’s at the moment.
