Everton new points deduction claim after Goodison – ‘Absolute disgrace’

Everton gave Goodison Park a good Merseyside Derby send-off with a 98th-minute equaliser against Liverpool.

James Tarkowski’s late Everton goal gained a point against a strong Liverpool team, who sit at the top of the Premier League table.

This leaves the Toffees now sitting 10 points above the relegation zone, with the future at Goodison looking brighter.

Points deduction call after Everton v Liverpool scenes

Although there were some joyous scenes for Everton at the end of the game as they got their late goal, what followed was more unsavoury.

After the full-time whistle was blown, Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrated in front of the Liverpool fans, shushing them after their chants about winning the league at Goodison Park.

Curtis Jones was not a fan of his actions and responded by running over and pushing the Blues midfielder which then led to a brawl between players on both teams.

Arne Slot was also delivered a red card after his reaction to the referee at the end of the game.

One talkSPORT caller called for a points deduction for the scenes as he said: “If it was one of the other clubs in the league, they’d get six points or nine points deducted.”

However, Sam Matterface was left laughing at these claims as he laughed and responded: “They wouldn’t. That’s never happened.”

The caller went on to say: “Youngsters were watching that last night, they’re going to do it on their pitches. If you do that in the streets, you get arrested.

“It was an absolute disgrace. I love both clubs, I think they’re great clubs but that was an absolute disgrace what happened the other night.”

However, Matterface was quick to clap back again as he pointed out: “When Ruud van Nistelrooy and Martin Keown had that confrontation back in 2004, something like that, they didn’t deduct points for that did they? No. They didn’t deduct points for that, you don’t get points deducted for players behaving badly on the pitch.”

David Moyes guiding Everton revival

Although the season was looking bleak coming into 2025, the appointment of Moyes at Everton has definitely turned things around and there has been a lift around Goodison Park as a result.

While there may have been some backlash surrounding the scenes after the Liverpool game, supporters hailed Doucoure for the passion he showed, something with has been lacking from the Toffees squad for the majority of the season.

It looks like the Blues have really stepped it up under their new boss and the standards inside the camp seem to have risen, which is being reflected on the pitch and in results too.

There is still plenty of work to be done in Merseyside to secure a brighter future ahead and the boss will not be sidetracked by one exciting result as he prepares for a game against Crystal Palace on Saturday (15 February) in the hope of adding more points to his side’s tally.

That being said, on this occasion, it was refreshing to see so many players buying into the occasion and representing the mood of such a big game in the city.
