Troy Deeney makes Everton ‘legend’ claim after what happened v Liverpool

Everton said goodbye to Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park in perfect fashion after a 98th-minute equaliser against Liverpool on Wednesday.

The Blues have turned their form around since the return of David Moyes as manager and things seem to be looking up.

Everton now sit 10 points above the relegation zone with worries of getting dragged into an end-of-season battle fading.

Troy Deeney makes Abdoulaye Doucoure legend claim

Although it was a perfect end to the game for those in Blue, the James Tarkowski equaliser certainly caused carnage at Goodison Park.

Both Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones were served second yellow cards after the full-time whistle when the Liverpool man reacted badly to Doucoure celebrating the result in front of the travelling Liverpool supporters.

A brawl between the two sets of players followed before Arne Slot also found himself being shown a red card for his actions towards the referee.

Although the scenes have come under criticism from some, many Blues fans were pleased to see their players have such an emotional investment in a game that meant so much.

Discussing the occasion live on talkSPORT (14 February), Alex Crook admitted he had no issue with the events as he said: “I’ve got no problem with what Doucoure did, celebrating in front of the Liverpool fans because they were singing a few minutes earlier, we won the league at Goodison Park. So if you’re going to dish it out you’ve got to take it back.”

Troy Deeney agreed with his view point and even made a bold Doucoure claim as he replied: “Yeah of course and that’s why I think at the same time, Curtis Jones is right to do that. He’s from Liverpool, he’s a Liverpool fan and he’s defending his team.

“I think Rory Jennings said it, both players come out of that excellently for their own fan bases. Doucoure will be a legend now to Everton fans for what he did and so will Curtis Jones.”

Abdoulaye Doucoure gains adoration from the Everton fans

For much of the season so far, Everton players have failed to show their commitment to the cause at Goodison Park which hasn’t helped as the club has tried to recover from tough times on and off the pitch.

However, Moyes’ appointment seems to have revived a number of players with confidence obvious and performances looking much more assured since his arrival.

Therefore, the Everton supporters will have absolutely loved seeing Doucoure’s reaction at the end of the game and the way he reacted in front of the Liverpool supporters who had been giving stick throughout the game.

Although his red card wasn’t ideal as it will now leave Moyes without the midfielder for his side’s game against Crystal Palace on Saturday (15 February), as Deeney says, he is someone who has certainly etched his name in Toffees history.

Now it is time to put the focus back to Premier League action with Moyes wanting his side to pick up as many points as possible in his side’s bid for safety this term.
