Everton transfer news: Approaches to be made for Merlin Rohl after bid development

Premier League clubs are set to make summer transfer moves for the services of Everton-linked midfielder Merlin Rohl, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Everton made two bids for Freiburg ace Rohl in the hope of securing the 22-year-old in the winter transfer window but saw both approaches rejected by the Bundesliga club.

This meant that the only new face arriving at Goodison for the remainder of the season was Carlos Alcaraz, who scored his first goal in Blue against Crystal Palace on Saturday (15 February).

The Toffees seemed keen to secure the midfielder’s services during the winter window but despite making two approaches, his current club turned down the offers and opted to keep Rohl where he was.

However, looking ahead to the summer transfer window, a number of top-flight clubs are now following in Everton’s footsteps and lining up a move to secure his services.

According to the print edition of The Sunday Mirror (16 February, page 69), a number of Premier League sides are interested in the youngster with approaches already expected at the end of the current campaign.

Crystal Palace are said to have sent scouts to watch the midfielder while Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Newcastle United are also credited with interest.

Everton may focus their efforts elsewhere in the summer transfer window

As the Toffees looked to improve their squad during the winter window, ahead of what was set to be an important end to the campaign, it’s no wonder that they were making moves to try and add where they could.

However, with Freiburg rejecting their offers, the Blues had to accept defeat and cope with who they already had available.

It’s safe to say though, that Moyes has had no trouble in doing so thus far, with another three points under his belt lifting the Blues to 13 points clear of the relegation zone.

If their form can stay at its best, the summer window will surely become a more exciting one for Moyes and he will be prepared to bring a number of improvements to Merseyside.

That being said, with other interested teams in Rohl’s services, the Toffees may well find themselves muscled out of negotiations come the summertime.

The young German is highly rated, being tipped for a call-up to the national side after representing at under-21 level.

However, in 14 Bundesliga appearances this term, the 22-year-old has just one assist showing there is plenty of work to be done to add to his game.

It will be interesting to see what the Blues choose to do after the conclusion of the campaign but with PSR restrictions meaning Everton still have to be measured in their moves, the Toffees will have to decide where to focus their attention.
