Alan Shearer ‘puzzled’ by what VAR did after Everton controversy
Alan Shearer was left puzzled by what VAR did as Everton drew 2-2 with Manchester United.
Goodison Park welcomed Ruben Amorim’s men in the Premier League on Saturday (22 February) as the Toffees extended their unbeaten run.
David Moyes faced disappointment against Manchester United though, dropping points despite being two goals ahead.
It could have been different after Andy Madley awarded a penalty for a clear pull on Ashley Young, only for VAR to send him to the monitor, which saw it overturned.

Madley not shown all angles of Everton v Manchester United controversy
Shearer was baffled that Madley wasn’t shown all the angles of the potential foul on Young by VAR.
The former striker believes Stockley Park failed to give the on-field referee all the views of the incident that happened in stoppage time at Goodison Park.
Shearer feels the original decision shouldn’t have been overturned as Matthijs De Ligt did impede Young.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football (24 February), the ex-England international said: “The thing that puzzled us, and certainly me on my analysis, was when they sent the referee to the screen, they didn’t show him all the angles. Now, how can that happen? You’re saying to a referee, ‘Mate, I think you’ve got this one really wrong’, yet you don’t show him all the angles.
“We saw them straightaway in the studio. Yet, we were watching the coverage live, watching the view that the referee had on the screen, and we’re thinking, hang on a minute, they haven’t shown him the angles that clearly show two pulls from De Ligt on [Young’s] shirt. How can that happen?”
Moyes to feel arrived by Goodison Park controversy
Moyes will likely be angry that Everton were potentially robbed of a massive win over Manchester United, which could have seen them further climb the table.
The Scottish manager has turned the tide at the Toffees since taking over from Sean Dyche only a matter of weeks ago.
With the Goodison Park faithful confident about Premier League survival after the recent results, The Friedkin Group’s decision to hire Moyes has paid dividends.
Everton are 14 points clear of the relegation zone as they sit above the Red Devils and West Ham United in the table.
Premier League table (2024/25) | Points |
14. Everton | 31 |
15. Man United | 30 |
16. West Ham United | 30 |
17. Wolves | 22 |
18. Ipswich Town | 17 |
19. Leicester City | 17 |
20. Southampton | 9 |
The English top flight has seen a resurgence from the Blues, who have won four and drawn two of their last six fixtures in the league.
While the result against the Red Devils wasn’t bad, the Merseyside outfit’s supporters were left with a sour taste as Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte scored.
VAR’s decision to call Madley to have a second look made the mood around the stadium go from bad to worse.
The referee could have decided to stick with his decision rather than overturning it, but it wasn’t meant to be for the Toffees on the day.
