Brentford v Everton: Ex FIFA official reacts to major controversy

Dermot Gallagher has reacted to the incident involving Beto as Everton took on Brentford in the Premier League.

The Toffees travelled to the capital to take on the Bees at the G-Tech Community Stadium.

In a hard fought game, the two teams shared the spoils as they played out a 1-1 draw on 26 February.

Sky Sports share footage showing Brentford deserved to be down to 10 men

On their website, Sky Sports shared footage of an incident involving Bees defender Ethan Pinnock and Beto.

The Toffees striker was clean through on goal, but was brought down by the centre-back and Simon Hooper did not even bother to revisit the incident as Beto was one-on-one and had a good goal-scoring chance.

When asked if Pinnock should’ve been shown a red card, Gallagher, a former FIFA official, responded: “I don’t think there’s any doubt. It’s one of the most unusual situations I’ve seen.

“The forward has thought ‘I can score, I want to go on’, but he gets up so quickly, the referee thinks he has a better chance on his own.

“As it was, it didn’t come off. But if he’s stopped on the ground, a red card.

“Pinnock hasn’t denied it because Beto has picked himself up and he’s still through on goal. That was key for the referee and he’s played the advantage. It’s a tough call.”

David Moyes will not be thrilled with Everton and Beto’s finishing against Brentford

While the visitors were hard done by not getting the decision go in their favour, David Moyes will not be too pleased with their efforts in front of goal.

Beto had three good chances to find the back of the net and two of them were even categorised as big chances, but he failed to beat Mark Flekken.

For someone in such good goal-scoring nick, it was a disappointing effort and arguably cost the team two points.

The Scotsman is not expected to be too harsh on his attackers but he will tell them that more is expected from them in the coming weeks.

Also, it’s imperative that the club rope in a new striker in the summer transfer window.
