Friedkin Group twist emerges as Dan Neil transfer update drops at Everton

Everton remain interested in signing Dan Neil after making an approach for him in the winter transfer window.

David Moyes is preparing for a summer of change as the Everton manager, with 13 of his players running out of their contracts at the end of the season.

Idrissa Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucoure are set to leave the Merseyside-based club as things stand, while Orel Mangala and Carlos Alcaraz could also return to their parent clubs after the expiry of their loan agreements.

This would leave James Garner, Tim Iroegbunam and Dwight McNeil as the Toffees’ only senior midfielders, meaning they would need to address the area in the summer transfer window.

Everton approach for Sunderland captain Neil revealed

Neil is one player Everton could rope in to strengthen their midfield this summer, having already made an approach to sign him in the winter transfer window.

According to TEAMtalk, the Goodison Park outfit could reignite their interest in the Sunderland captain after a failed attempt in January.

The news outlet reported via their website on Tuesday (8 April) that The Friedkin Group are prepared to back Moyes in the transfer market ahead of the 2025-26 season.

This could include the signing of £20million-rated Neil, who is also wanted by West Ham United.

However, in a new twist, it has emerged that the interest in Neil is viewed as ‘group-wide’ for the Friedkins, meaning AS Roma are also in the mix.

The Serie A club are looking for a player in the 23-year-old’s profile and are seemingly impressed by his ability to play as a deep-lying midfielder or an attacking one.

Neil in Friedkin Group twist ahead of summer

This situation could lead to two teams run by the same owners competing for the same player this summer.

However, it is worth noting that the £20m valuation of Neil is considered too high as things stand.

A lot could depend on whether or not Sunderland, who are placed fourth in the Championship, earn promotion or not.

The Black Cats could look to tie the versatile midfielder down to a new contract if they earn their way back into the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Everton, Roma and West Ham could wait to see if they can negotiate a cheaper deal for Neil.
