Everton want to sign Dan Neil as big Sunderland exit news emerges

David Moyes has a job to do this summer as he looks to continue the process of bringing Everton back to life.

The Scotsman has changed everything since his return to Goodison Park this season, but there is a big summer transfer window ahead as he looks to put his stamp on things.

One man on the list to aid that transformation is Sunderland’s Dan Neil as Moyes sets out his targets for the summer.

Sunderland face losing captain Neil

As Everton prepare to make the move to Bramley-Moore Dock, Moyes has the big job of choosing which players will be making the move with him.

The Toffees have proven they do have some capable players in the squad but, similarly, if they are going to aim for higher next term, then additions will also be needed.

The Friedkin Group are likely to increase the level of investment on Merseyside, although after years of being stung by PSR restrictions, the new owners will also be wary about any business being done in a sustainable way.

With that in mind, it’s not surprising that the Blues have been linked with some transfers from the Championship, including West Brom’s Tom Fellows.

Neil is the next second-tier name on the list, with Darren Witcoop reporting in the Sunday Mirror (27 April, page 65) that Everton are “big admirers” of the Sunderland captain, ahead of the summer transfer window.

Everton preparing for smart business

Everton need to make sure that any summer additions are going to add to their side, but they also have to be measured in their business, which makes the Championship a good place to start looking for prospective additions.

As Sunderland’s captain, Neil has played a big part in the season as the Black Cats have secured a play-off spot in the hope of returning to the Premier League.

The outcome of the play-off campaign in the North East could well dictate what Sunderland’s price tag for their midfielder would be ahead of the summer, meaning the Toffees may have to wait a bit longer to find out what they’re battling with.

However, as it stands, the 23-year-old will be entering the final year of his contract at The Stadium of Light in the summer, so if the Mackems did remain in the Championship, they could well be looking to cash in on a key member of the squad at this stage.
