Everton player set to be out until July with Grade 3 injury
Everton defender James Tarkowski appears to have ruptured his hamstring and it’s likely a Grade 3 tear, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.
The injury expert claims that, as he has needed to have surgery, it is a significant setback that needs surgical intervention.
David Moyes confirmed at the end of April that the English centre-back will not be returning this season.

Tarkowski expected to make individual training return in July
This kind of injury, post-surgery, usually takes 10 weeks of recovery before a player can return to individual training.
That would mean a mid-July return to individual training is likely on the cards for the 32-year-old.
He’s also expected to be next to full fitness right in time for the start of the 2025/26 season.
James Tarkowski stats | Premier League 2024/25 |
Appearances | 33 |
Tackles won % | 62.5 |
Duels won % | 68.4 |
Pass accuracy % | 81.6 |
Goals | 1 |
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Dr Brar, a specialist in Physical Therapy and a Sports Scientist, said about Tarkowski: “This appears to be a Grade 3 full rupture of the hamstring based on the fact that he will need surgery.
“I would expect him back in individual training by mid-July, around 10 or so weeks with a general process that is methodically building up his strength, mobility and neuromuscular control.
“He should return close to full fitness right in time for the start of next season.“
Tarkowski might not be a regular for Everton next season
Tarkowski, a mainstay in the Everton defence since joining in 2022, may not be the first choice next season due to several factors.
At 32, his recent hamstring injury, requiring surgery, may also have an impact on the player he is once he’s back in training.
If Jarrad Branthwaite remains at Everton, he’s likely to retain his spot given his potential and performances.
Additionally, the Toffees’ reported interest in signing a new defender suggests a strategic shift under Moyes to bolster the backline with younger, versatile players.
This could see Branthwaite paired with a new signing, relegating Tarkowski to a backup role as Everton prioritises long-term defensive stability.
