Mark Clattenburg surprised over Everton controversy

David Moyes led his Everton side back to winning ways on Saturday courtesy of a 3-1 victory against Fulham.

Although the Toffees went behind in the first half, Vitaliy Mykolenko put his side level just before half-time.

Goals from Michael Keane and Beto in the second 45 minutes proved to be enough to earn Everton all three points at Craven Cottage.

There was controversy surrounding Mykolenko late in the game when VAR checked for a handball against him, although he was able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Clattenburg offers verdict on Mykolenko handball

After scoring his first Premier League goal of the season, Mykolenko would have been on cloud nine going into the second half of the game.

When Fulham were pressing forward, a cross into the box was met by the arm of Mykolenko inside the area.

The defender certainly didn’t raise his hand, but his arm was out from his side, which left questions being asked by the home side over a potential penalty call.

The penalty was not given, but VAR recommended an on-field review of the incident. Referee Darren England stuck to his original decision after seeing the handball shout, and the Blues escaped without punishment.

Speaking to Everton News (11 May), former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg admitted he was left surprised with how the incident played out.

He said: “Premier League referees have different criteria when it comes to handball and I was not surprised it was not given in the end.

“There has been less than 10 penalties given all season for handball so there is a stricter approach on what constitutes a penalty.

“Mykolenko’s arm is slightly away from the body but he tries to move it away as the ball comes in from a short distance.

“I am more surprised a very experienced VAR in Michael Salisbury would recommend a review when this is not a clear and obvious error from the referee Darren England.

“We do not see very often referees after going to a review to stick with their original decision, so England needs to be applauded for this and in the end, the right decision was reached as I don’t believe that this is a penalty.”

Moyes ready for Everton progression

Although Everton saw their form take a little dip of late, it cannot be overlooked just how well the Blues have done since Moyes’ return.

The boss will have been pleased to see his side get back on track, especially against a Fulham side who have been strong this season.

However, with nothing left to play for, those on Merseyside will be ready to look forward to what the future holds.

The Friedkin Group are expected to back the boss financially over the summer transfer window, allowing the Scotsman to strengthen his side in preparation for the new campaign.

Based on their form under Moyes, if the Blues can get their business right, there is no reason why they won’t be ready to push further up the Premier League table next term.
